“Umar was terribly upset,” Shayma said. “He rushed back to Madina that very moment. He collected flour, dates and some other things and took them all the way back to the family himself. His slave wanted to take them for him, but he wanted to do it himself, because it was his responsibility. And while the woman cooked the food, he kept the children busy playing. Yet, he was the caliph of the great Muslim country!”

“Didn’t she know who he was?” Umar asked. “Wasn’t she embarrassed because the caliph himself came carrying bags of flour and dates for her?”

“Oh, she didn’t know,” Shayma replied with a smile. “His actions were so simple that you couldn’t tell he was a powerful ruler. None of the rich clothes and bodyguards that you see nowadays! But when the children had finished eating and he was about to leave, she thanked him and said, ’Really, you ought to be the caliph instead of Umar!’ I suppose he didn’t want to embarrass her by telling her who he really was!”
